The terms "door supervisor" and "event security" are often used interchangeably โ but they describe different roles with different legal requirements, different training and different applications. Getting this wrong can leave you non-compliant, underprotected or simply paying for the wrong thing.
The Core Difference
The most important distinction is a legal one. A Door Supervisor must hold a specific SIA Door Supervisor licence to legally work on licensed premises (any venue that holds an alcohol licence). An Event Security Officer holds an SIA Security Guard licence, which allows them to work at events and guard property โ but not on licensed premises where alcohol is sold.
In short: if your event sells alcohol on licensed premises, you legally need Door Supervisors โ not event security guards. If your event is on unlicensed land or doesn't sell alcohol, event security officers may be appropriate.
SIA Door Supervisor โ When Do You Need One?
You need SIA Door Supervisors when:
- Your venue holds a premises licence under the Licensing Act 2003
- Your event takes place at a licensed venue (pub, club, concert hall, stadium)
- Alcohol is being sold at the event
- Your premises licence conditions specify it
Door Supervisors are trained specifically for the challenges of licensed premises โ managing intoxicated individuals, applying licensing law, ID checking, responsible service and working within the conditions of a premises licence.
SIA Event Security Officer โ When Do You Need One?
Event security officers are the right choice when:
- Your event is on unlicensed land (fields, parks, private estates)
- No alcohol is sold at the event
- The role is primarily crowd management, perimeter security or access control at an event rather than a licensed venue
- You need additional bodies at a large event alongside Door Supervisors
Can You Mix Both on the Same Event?
Yes โ and for larger events it's often the most cost-effective approach. Door Supervisors cover the licensed bar areas, entry points and areas where alcohol is present. Event security officers manage car parks, perimeter fencing, backstage areas and other unlicensed zones. Unity Secure can supply both as part of a single, coordinated deployment.
What About Festival Security?
Festivals in West Sussex typically require a mix of both. Licensed bar areas and entry gates require Door Supervisors. Campsite security, perimeter patrols and general crowd management roles are typically filled by event security officers. Our team will advise on the right split for your specific event.
