Whether you're organising a music festival, a corporate dinner or a private party in West Sussex, one of the most common questions is: do I legally need SIA-licensed security? The answer isn't always straightforward โ but this guide will help you understand exactly what's required and what's simply good practice.
When Is SIA-Licensed Security Legally Required?
Under the Private Security Industry Act 2001, certain security roles require the operative to hold a valid SIA licence. Specifically:
- Anyone working as a door supervisor on licensed premises (venues with an alcohol licence) must hold an SIA Door Supervisor licence
- Anyone deployed to guard property or people in a public-facing security role must hold an appropriate SIA licence
- Close protection officers must hold the SIA Close Protection licence
Key rule: If your event takes place on licensed premises โ anywhere that holds a premises licence under the Licensing Act 2003 โ all door staff must be SIA-licensed. There are no exceptions.
What About Events on Unlicensed Premises?
Private events on unlicensed land โ such as a private party in a garden or field โ may technically not require SIA-licensed security. However, if alcohol is being sold, if the event is ticketed, or if the site has a temporary event notice (TEN), licensing conditions are likely to apply. We strongly recommend getting advice specific to your event rather than assuming SIA security isn't needed.
When Is SIA Security Strongly Recommended Even If Not Legally Required?
Even where the law doesn't strictly mandate it, professional security is strongly advisable when your event involves:
- Alcohol being served or consumed
- Crowds of 100 people or more
- Late-night finishing times
- High-profile guests or VIPs
- A location in a busy or high-footfall area
- Previous incidents at the same venue or event
Beyond legal compliance, having licensed, trained security officers protects your attendees, your venue and โ importantly โ you. Liability in the event of an incident can be significant if you failed to take reasonable precautions.
How Do I Check an SIA Licence Is Valid?
You can check any SIA licence number on the SIA's official licence checker. All Unity Secure officers hold valid, current SIA licences โ we're happy to provide licence numbers on request before any booking.
